A good way to have people like you (it's not money)

Recently I've been organizing my past photos, documents, etc and the picture above got me into thinking.

Having your passion and helping people with it might be the key to having people like you.

I can't think of anybody that is pursuing their real passion and is unhappy at the same time.

I think people are attracted to people that are happy, not who are unhappy.

And chances are, if you follow your passion and learn to sustain it, you will be a happy person.

A lot of people that seem successful but not pursuing their passion, tend to be more lonely or at least, somewhat drained.

So today I want to share something I experienced when I was in Vancouver, which is the core of why I chose to pursue my path in the food industry.

My wine trip in Vancouver...

I was in Vancouver on a wine trip. I tasted a really nice Riesling in Niseko, Japan, and the wine was from Canada. Then I really felt like I want to be there. So there I was.

I stayed in an Airbnb, and it was a 2 bedroom apartment with the owner using 1 bedroom.

And I think 4 guests were squeezed into the apartment.

There was an Asian girl that stayed on an air mattress to sleep in the living room…

I think her Vancouver life wasn’t going as she intended, always sighed whenever I see her, even sobbing sometimes.

So I made her some eggs and served it with Caponata, as I was going to have brunch anyway.

Just making some eggs can make people's day.

The caponata was already cooked beforehand, so it only took 5 minutes or so to prepare.

The girl's facial expression completely changed when she ate it, and that's one good reason I like to cook for others. Makes my day, too when I see those reactions.

I remember her saying, "Wow... you always cook like this? You must get a lot of girls..."

When she said that I was "??????" at the time, but perhaps she is right.

Focus on what you're passionate about

My friend/mentor from Singapore used to tell me,

"Ryu, I know you don’t but remember not to chase a girl's ass. Focus on what you’re passionate about, and the right ones will naturally be drawn to you.”

Not just girls but I generally think I draw good people from pursuing my passion for cooking.

So when I was checking out from the Airbnb, the Asian girl talked about the eggs and how it made her day, again.

Well... it makes my day, too :)

So I'm glad this Covid thing gave me the clarity to just concentrate on what I am passionate about.

So I urge you to follow your passion. You should really look into what you care about if you think you don't have any passion.

And I am lucky to have a passion just because I come from a foodie, cooking family, and you have a lot of opportunities to make people happy by cooking.

So, let me share this easiest sunny side up recipe, that made my Airbnb mate happy.

Recipe: How to make the easiest but beautiful sunny side up

Instructions:

  • Heat a pan with cooking oil on mid-heat. (I use olive oil)
  • Wait till the oil can slide from the pan easily. (this means it is heated properly, don't let the smoke come out because that is too hot)

  • crack the eggs to the frying pan, put salt, pepper/herbs you like, then turn off the heat.
  • Put shredded cheese on the eggs.
  •  Drop some water on the surface of the pan, and cover it with a lid. ( I covered it with another pan because the airbnb didn't have a lid)

  • Wait about 2 min and the moist will cook for you, and serve when the eggs are cooked the way you like them.
  • I personally add drops of soy sauce and try to have the cheese burnt with the soy sauce. It's really fragrant and delicious.

Key Points:

  • The key is to turn off the heat so you don't burn the bottom of the egg while you're cooking the top.
  • The same thing applies to scrambled eggs. Have the pan well heated, and turn off the heat. Scramble it til it's the eggs you prefer.

Happy Cooking :)

I also wrote the recipe for the tomato dish on the side of the eggs!!
