Recipe: Easy Microwave cooked Oyakodon
Oyako means parent and child, and it often refers to using chicken and eggs which are the parent and the child.
We simmer the chicken with dashi with onions and finish by adding eggs. It really goes well with rice, and we Japanese eat this dish a lot.
Although oyakodon is fairly easy to make, we want to introduce an easier way using a microwave!
How to cook Easy Oyakodon with a microwave
Ingredients
- Rice...2 bowls
- Chicken breast/thigh...100g
- onions...1/2
- eggs...2
Seasonings
- water...100cc
- powder dashi...1/3 spoon
- mirin...2 spoons
- sugar...1 teaspoon
- soy sauce...2 spoons
How to make
- Cut the chicken into smaller chunks and slice the onion. Put into a heat-resistant container.
- put all the seasonings into 1.
- Put a plastic wrap or cover (leave slightly open if using cover), and microwave for 6 minutes in 500W.
- Stir and mix eggs and add it to 3. Put a plastic wrap/cover and heat for 2.5 minutes in 500W. Add 10 seconds each to have the eggs cooked the way you like.
- Put 4 into the rice and serve.
Key points
- Cut the chicken into thin slices so it is easier for it to cook in a short amount of time.
- A Japanese will typically use chicken thigh, but if you prefer to have it healthier, use chicken breast.
Save time cooking with a microwave
On a busy week, it can be overwhelming to cook using gas stoves. By using a microwave, you save time washing the equipment as well. Just simply cut the ingredients, mix and cook in the microwave!
In Japanese cuisine we have a lot of donburi dishes like oyakodon, katsudon, and kaisendon. Oyakodon is a really tasty, easy, and nutritious menu to start your Japanese food journey!
