A Rotenburo Onsen closest to the clouds in Japan, Honzawa Onsen in Nagano!!

Onsen Hotsprings is a big part of Japanese culture. As a big fan of both natural onsen and hiking, this "closest onsen from clouds" Honzawa Onsen is somewhere I would definitely want to make a visit :)

Small outdoor onsen 2150 meters up a trail in Nagano

Honzawa Onsen Unjo no yu(本沢温泉 雲上の湯)is a 1-hour hike up in the summer and a 4-hour hike up during the winter onsen rich in beautiful wildflowers. It only has a small mountain hut with a small outdoor onsen near it.

The onsen was opened in the Meiji Era and has been around for more than 130 years in Yatsugatake. It was originally built for people that move in between Saku and Suwa areas for resting and healing.

Key Points of the News

The news of the top video is in Japanese, so I translated the key points of the video!
  • Honzawa Onsen Unjo no Yu has the highest elevation of all the outside onsen hot springs in Japan.
  • Japanese from the age of 20s to 70s were visiting the onsen!
  • The visitors were from all across Japan, despite the long journey to get there.
  • On a sunny day, you can see Mt Fuji from the trail on the way to the onsen.
  • A camping manga helped boost younger generations to enjoy hiking x onsen trips.
I myself am a big fan of hiking, and love stopping by onsens to heal my muscle ache from the hike up! This is a must-go spot for me in the near future!! The best time to visit is October to November during the autumn leaves season!!

I've covered other interesting onsens that can be read here:
