A snowy Rotenburo Onsen in the "last hidden onsen of Kanto" in Kinukawa, Nikko!
It is suddenly getting very snowy in Japan! And to avoid the cold temperature we like to combine snow seeing and onsen for our travels for the winter!
Today I translated the Japanese news introducing the hidden onsen where you can see snow in Nikko, 4 hour's drive from Tokyo!
Key Points of the News
- Called the last "hitou"=秘湯 or "hidden" onsen of the Kanto region is in Nikko, 4 hour's drive from Tokyo
- Okukinu Onsen is famous for the "Yukimi onsen" 雪見温泉 or "watch the snow" in an onsen.
- It is a Gensen Kakenagashi 源泉掛け流し onsen which can represent good quality as the fresh onsen will keep flowing in, while there are onsens that reuse the onsen water by filtering and heating it up.
- The news interviewed the same onsen 30 years ago, and the onsen is preserved very well, it hasn't changed since then.
- One of the onsen ryokan from the area, "Kajiyu" 加仁湯, the sulfur onsen is known to have a strong smell and good health benefits. The lady getting interviewed was saying the sulfur smell left in her body even after she gets home is what makes her content.
- The cute yellow wild animal is called ten= テン. These meetings with wild animals are the pros to spending a long time getting there.
- The onsen owners have to maintain the onsen water pipes well, as the cold weather can freeze it. If the water becomes ice, it's very difficult to have the pipes running again so they constantly need to make sure it's avoided.
- There are snow trails that take you to beautiful snowy sceneries, which makes it a very popular attraction for both Japanese and international tourists!
