Go further into the mountains from Karuizawa to a sky Onsen town, Tsumagoi
We have so many onsens in Japan, and we always spend a lot of time deciding where to go. That's when news and travel agencies, and blogs can help.
I want to introduce another snow-seeing onsen in Tsumagoi town, Gunma!
Key Points of the News
- Called the "Sky onsen," Manza onsen Nisshinkan is located 1,800m above sea level.
- The onsen is known for its great scenery, along with the snow that surrounds the onsen.
- It's one mountain across Kusatsu Onsen, the most well known onsen of East Japan.
- The main road is blocked during the winter, so the only way is to take the minor route from Karuizawa.
- The onsen water didn't rise to the "perfect standard" after opening at the time of film and showed how much time and effort the onsen people put to welcome guests.
- The onsen town people usually have to snow clear all day on a snowy day, as it can snow up to 50~70cm a day.
- They prepare well for tragedies where even heavy snow cuts supply they are stocked with 1 week of food for everyone. Within a week, the government can assist to evacuate, so the safety standard is very impressive...
The art of countryside onsen is the deep nature
When I was in Gero Onsen area, the opening of the public onsen was delayed as the temperature was also too cold. When we were able to enter, the onsen was still a bit cold compared to normal. Then a local came for a soak in the onsen, then went out to tell them to raise the temperature.
Then it became boiling hot...! So when you stay in bigger onsen towns, the standard is controlled very well, while the smaller countryside towns, it's up to the nature.
The work the town people put to welcome the guests is quite amazing. It's less convenient, of course. But you will sometimes see wildlife, and unique mountain cuisine using sansai=山菜 which is mountain plants. These are actually the art of it.

I also try to share information from Japan that fills our hearts or might help us think about how to better the world!
Here are the SNS channels I have, but I mainly focus on Twitter at the moment. I share my past car trip around mainly Hokkaido, and how it was living there!
